I really like my Sony Handicam, great for making some very nice mid-quality videos. Add in an audio interface and we have some very interesting results!
The one thing that they did not do well is use as a webcam. Sure the image was great but every 40-60 seconds it would drop the image to do a safety check of the sensor. This does NOT happen when you use it as a video camera, but as a webcam, this was annoying and detractive.
That was reason enough for me to get a webcam, but I felt that I needed something that was a bit better on the quality scale.
The need was slightly increased with the increase in the number of zoom meetings that I have been both doing and planning.
After setting a budget limit and some fast research, I chose the Insta 360 Link 2 Pro.
What a cool piece of kit! Good quality, nice sharpness, good color, 4k so good resolution and that AI and the gimble… very cool.
I attached it to the top of my mixer and setup various scenes for my needs, it is the cherry on top of my ice cream sunday!
My zoom sessions have improved considerably!
Thanks to the integrated software, I’ve created 6 scenes, each shows a scene for different needs like close-ups of the mixer, far andclose shots of me and so on.
The final thing that bugs me is the background. Behind me are 2 mirrored doors and those reflect a lot of the rest of my room. If I could get those covered then I would further improve “the shot”. I have 2 thoughts:
My first thought is that I might use my muslin background from the photography days. By placing the muslin on a long round slice of thick dowel wood and hanging it up on the wall behind me, this may be the cheapest way to handle the situation. It would need to be measured and the dowel needs to be long enough.
The second thought is to use that plastic glazed window covering that would mask the mirrors out. Hmmm, the more I think about that, the more I like that solution, less things to set up or that need attention, but it may cost a few dollars more.
Decisions, decisions. 🙂
Addendum – May 4, 2026
I’ve decided on the glazed look. I bought 4 rolls of window glaze from a local hardware store and spent a few hours putting it up. Makes the whole background so much nicer than before… no more seeing the complete room in my zoom sessions!
I am now enjoying the webcam and I may even be using it as a camera for those videos that I make on my Free Bass accordion against the white wall behind my desk or as test recordings in preparation for official videos where those demand the highest quality. Yes, the quality of that little webcam is just that good for sessions that don’t require the ultimate quality, it’s very good and excellent for a webcam!
