Sabor a Mi – Remake

March 30th, 2024

Today I was going through some files doing a small cleanup and found the original files for “Sabor a Mi”.

First thing I noticed was that I wasn’t even shooting in LOG, where as today I not only take videos in LOG but in RAW format, but I recall that I wasn’t very happy with the video when I released it… timings were off, the green screen quality wasn’t very good and the performance was a bit off… but the concept that day was not perfection, but pick a song, practice it a little and make that video in a very short time, which I accomplished.

Now a few years later, I found those files and decided to make a reproduction of that process on a new computer, different/better software and much more experience using these tools.

The latest version of Davinci Resolve can now access Apple ProRes files, and so I took the time to upres the files a LOT so that when I did the punch-ins, they would be of better quality.  I also worked things in Reaper lightly and exported with perfect volumes (click on the pic to see it in another window full sized):

YouTube sees the file as perfectly set to -14 LUFS and therefore it is not touched in the normalizing phase, which results in maximum volume and zero compression by YouTube.  Along with that, I also had more experience with green screens (finally pretty much perfecting that process), and that came out too, both in nicer results, and way less time to get things to that level, very pleasing!

“Sabor a Mi” was also my first attempt at a multi-cam green screen, and setting that up again was a blast to complete.  I completely changed my normal flow and rendered a high 180gb file that was going to be my working file.  After that creating the file 4k file with beginning and end was very fast and simple and the final render was under 15 minutes… impressive!

Here is the result of those couple hours of work:

It was fun, educational and better than the original version… what a great way to spend a few hours on a Sunday!
