How-To: Mackie 1640i

June 5, 2024

It’s been 8 years that I waited for someone to create a “how-to” video for the Mackie 1640i… and others have been waiting for over 14 years, and there is no serious attempt at one either… until now.

I picked mine up in 2016 and just used it in it’s more or less basic forms and more often than not, just made it my 16X16 audio interface, and loved it, but never delved too deep in to it’s workings, so I finally decided to make my own video.

When I started it, I thought about it a little, about what I wanted the video to be like, what was in it. I soon came to the fact that I wanted it to be part of my “Mild to Wild” series… it’s become a bit of a “thing” for me to make a “Mild to Wild” video about things that I have a little passion about. That mixer has a lot of tech integrated into that 35lb case, and as I make the video, in return, it shares it’s inner secrets with me and I learn more, and that is a fair trade.

So, here it is my “Mackie 1640i Mild to Wild”… enjoy!

Addendum: June 5, 2024

Holy crap, not even one entry and already an addendum?? Yup!
Truth is that I have already been working on the videos for about 2-3 weeks… here and there and I absolutely hated the results, so much so that I need to restart over the Reel to Reel and 4-Track sections from scratch. The other parts are also going to take longer as I am going to prep better and practice a little more before filming. This is not an easy task, no wonder no-one wanted to make this video!

Addendum: June 7, 2024

Today I put in some good time and started over almost from the start, but this time it is coming together better than the first time.

I completed the basic hardware setup, basics of recording in REAPER and the first of two templates, the ITB (In The Box) section. Over the next week I hope to complete the OTB (Outside The Box). Once that is done, I will have to again slow down and learn/practice for the next sections. Looking forward to it too!

Addendum: June 8, 2024

Did some nice work today completing the OTB (Outside The Box), section and in creating the chapter for the Reel to Reel portion. Next on the list is likely completing the chapter on 4-track recording. This is taking a crazy amount of hours and time to get rolling but it’s coming along!

Addendum: June 10, 2024

Spent an hour this morning organizing the scripting for the 4-track section as it is more complex and convoluted. Also gathered up some of the screen images and started the basic video line to explain the process. One hour just to script a portion of the video!

Addendum: June 13, 2024

Finally making some progress! I just rendered the first 4 videos of the series! Two more to go to complete it, but these two are the hardest/longest to make. After the last one is made, I’ll pull the completed song alone and that will be the 7th and final video of the series, then off to the next project.

Addendum: June 23, 2024

Things are coming together! I worked on the 2nd last video, the EFFECTS section. I know that I am not a big effects user, but I just wanted to highlight the 2 OTB methods and the 1 main way I use effects in Reaper. Once done that means there is one video left to do before I end this section and move on to the next project.

Once I get the last video done, I will post them all here.

Oh, a not so nice thing happened that prevented me from starting that last video this week… somehow one of my virtual computer hard drives got corrupted and I lost the entire VM of my web server. That sucked royally as I wasted near an entire weekend getting it back, but I did get it back and lost nothing but one minor post that was on THIS page from June 21 (a small update that I included today).

Let’s take that as a huge win!!

Addendum June 28, 2024

Today I complete video #5 and uploaded the first 5 of the videos in this series.

Here are the videos we have so far:

Video #1

Video #2

Video #3

Video #4

Video #5

Addendum: July 3rd, 2024

So, here are the beginning planning stages of the final song. I have the song already selected, but I need to plan this out. I also I want to use some effects and a tool that I have not used in a very long time… the Yamaha FB-01 as my vintage piece of gear, as if accordions were not vintage… haha.

So, at this point here are the starting tracks (which may change):

Track #1 and #2, the BK-7m
Track #3 the FB-01 Xylophone
Track #4, the marimba
Track #5 the accordion with clarinet reed
Track #6, the accordion with the musette reed
Track #7, orchestral violins
Track #8, I’d love to find a goood trumpet

More to come soon!

Enjoy!
