{"id":3157,"date":"2026-04-02T13:43:56","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T17:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/syner-g.no-ip.biz\/mymusic\/?p=3157"},"modified":"2026-04-18T17:14:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T21:14:21","slug":"last-mixer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/syner-g.no-ip.biz\/mymusic\/last-mixer\/","title":{"rendered":"The Last Mixer I will ever own!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>April 2nd, 2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;ve decided to move up to a full digital mixer, so I started the process of seing what was out there, and after about 100 hours of researching, I found it, the perfect mixer for my needs.\u00a0 It did everything that I wanted, and more&#8230; it had all the preamps I wanted&#8230; and more.\u00a0 It had all the processing needs and features that I could ever want&#8230; and more.\u00a0 It was the QU-5, but right away upgraded to the QU-6.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.long-mcquade.com\/files\/443476\/xl_35946f3db1d226768ed876bbd1f4db38.webp?alt=Qu-6%2032-Channel%2096kHz%20Digital%20Audio%20Mixer\" alt=\"Image 1 of 4\" width=\"350\" height=\"220\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was perfect&#8230; almost.\u00a0 The mixer of my dreams ended up coming from the factory with a defect, fader #17 that vibrated loudly. At the least, it was annoying, at most it intruded in to my recordings.\u00a0 I tried another mixer of the same model, that one did it too.\u00a0 The dealer where I purchase it from did the research and they told me that for some reason a firmware update is needed to address it and that the QU-5, QU-6 and QU-7 models all had it.\u00a0 I was dejected and very disappointed, I *really* liked the QU-6!<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 880px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-3157-1\" width=\"880\" height=\"495\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/syner-g.no-ip.biz\/mymusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fader17.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/syner-g.no-ip.biz\/mymusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fader17.mp4\">http:\/\/syner-g.no-ip.biz\/mymusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fader17.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That said, no matter how much I liked it, I was not going to live with a mixer that came from the factory with a known defect and wait months or years waiting for a fix.\u00a0 The next model down definitely did not meet my needs and the similar model moving up was over $4000 more expensive, which is ridiculous, even if it was even more amazing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, I made a compromise&#8230; fewer faders but higher quality, more effects, greater routing and better preamps were accepted by moving up to the SQ-5 and NO fader 17 issues!.\u00a0 Even at that this model was much more expensive ($2000+ more!).\u00a0 Peace of mind has a price, and so that difference was paid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here-in starts another challenge&#8230;\u00a0 Allen &amp; Heath take 2 weeks to deliver any new mixer, so on top of the 2 weeks that I waitied for the first QU-6, the week I wasted testing the first *and* second 2nd QU-6 and now the 2 more weeks waiting for the SQ-5&#8230; thats a month and a half of time wasted!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Well, during that 2 weeks waiting time, I at least had the chance to get a little familiar with the SQ-5 via YouTube, the online PDF manuals and installing the &#8220;MixPad SQ&#8221; app on my iPad.\u00a0 The QU-5 was a bit simpler and easier to use but I am looking forward to using the more advanced features and enjoying the higher quality results.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few images of my mixer.\u00a0 If you click on the image, it opens larger in a new tab 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This mixer will offer me conveniences and possibilities that my Mackie 1640i cannot and though I thoroughly enjoyed the Mackie for many years, I feel it&#8217;s time to move up and on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As of the first week of Aplril, I will be using this mixer in all my audio\/video projects and look forward to making the best music I have ever made in my life!<\/p>\n<h3>April 2nd, 2026<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">OK, it&#8217;s been 24 hours with the SQ-5, and this thing is a BEAST.\u00a0 The design of the QU is more recent, more refined, but compared to the SQ series&#8230; well, let&#8217;s just say that even with the drop from 24 faders down to 16, there is nothing to regret.\u00a0 This thing just exudes a higher level of quality.\u00a0 The faders move so much faster and smoother, the preamps seem audibly clearer to my ears, but the knowledge that I gained with my time on the QU is of little use on the SQ.\u00a0 They do things similarly, but not the same, and so I kind of fall back to the start.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To that end, I purchased a small video course and I will go through it from start to finish several times, doing a hands-on at the same time as I follow the video and once I complete that, I should be good to go for the most part.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I enjoy the learning process and every &#8220;win&#8221; gives me knowledge and that makes me happy.<\/p>\n<p>More to come, but in the meantime, here are thanks to it being Good Friday, I got up very early (4:30am), and went downstairs to play a little with the console.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I accomplished 2 important tasks&#8230; First, I set up communication on 32 channels so that it can capture output from my mixer in to Reaper.\u00a0 The 2nd task was to set up Reaper so that it can accept the MIDI controls and via this technology, my mixer can control Reaper&#8217;s own faders via the faders on the SQ-5 itself!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, I reprogrammed layer &#8220;F&#8221; to see the specific MIDI channels my setup required and then setup 2 of the softkeys (#7 and #8) so that I can shift forward and backward on Layer &#8220;F&#8221; to be able to view and work them.\u00a0 Here is a bonus&#8230; no matter how many tracks I have in Reaper (I mean no matter&#8230; even like 300 trakcs or more!), they are visible on the SQ-5 scribble panel and even copy the names of the tracks in Reaper&#8230; amazing!<\/p>\n<h3>April 4, 2026<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Did lots of testing today!\u00a0 Also made an extended XLR cable and verified the functionality of the NW-800 on the new mixer.\u00a0 It *really* sounds different!\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s the detail of the BeyerDynamics headset or the digital environment&#8230; but it does sound better and I hear way more detail!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;ve also wired up the Ketron X4 and BK-7m arrangers as well as making some processing changes in the EQ, Gate and compressor, making them sound better than ever!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next came some brief Zoom Meeting testing.\u00a0 I was alone in the meeting room, but from what little I can tell, it works and sounds great.\u00a0 I want to do a little more testing with more than just me alone, in the near future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I then also routed 2 pairs of XLR cables that will permit me to record in the 3 main areas of the basement where I will be recording with my Neewer NW-410 and SE ELectronics SE4400a mics and placed the mics on stands, ready for action.\u00a0 Each pair of mics is ready for action in two specific locations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The NW-410 mics are small and perfect for placing on either side of my mixer for when I want to record and be close to my setup.\u00a0 The second place is in the area where I make Free Bass movies, the area between my desk and wall with 2 doors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The SE Electronics SE4400a mics are reserved for higher quality sessions and they are going to be placed in the green screen area or the area near my accordion shelves, when I need them for making videos with higher quality sound required.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, I&#8217;ve customized most of layer &#8220;A&#8221; in the SQ5 for my needs and created a special project in Reaper that can record my required inputs into separate tracks WITHOUT processing, as I can work on it in post in Reaper, perfect for the coming music I want to make!<\/p>\n<p><a be Easter Sunday but it is as happy as Christmas around here!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I did several hours of playing on the SQ5 today and I am now ready to start testing.\u00a0 justify;\">I can now separately control exactly what goes in to my ears versus what comes out of my speakers and this alone is amazing.\u00a0 Just because of this one thing, I can now:<br \/>\n&#8211; hear everyone perfectly in Zoom Meetings without feedback<br \/>\n&#8211; listen to backing tracks that I have pre-recorded without sound leakage coming in to my microphones when recording<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This eliminates some issues and makes things convenient&#8230; and the sound quality from these very affordable ear-bud monitors along with the IEM transceivers shown in the pics above make it a joy to use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is starting to get very interesting and even more fun!<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, the wires\/adapters so that I can plug in my wireless transceivers for when I want to make a recording with wireless equipment are completed as are the setup for the MIDI, which proved to be quite easy, thanks to CME&#8217;s wireless MIDI adapters!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">Testing the IEMs, they worked perfectly and I heard or felt no lag or latency. I tested the Ketron and then modified it so that it sends drum\/rhytms on it&#8217;s L\/R send and sends all it&#8217;s right-hand sounds out to Channel #3, making the 3rd channel for additional right-hand sounds when I want them (who could turn down an additional several hundred sounds for the right hand and something like 20 different drum sets for effects!).\u00a0 I tested out the BK-7m and that outputs as well as the wireless for the accordion channels worked.\u00a0 I ended with testing the 4 outputs of the 4 analog mics and getting them in the system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>EVERYTHING WORKS!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">OK, so maybe not everything.\u00a0 I tried getting a Matrix to work for more control, but I really don&#8217;t need it, it was just to learn, so I will put that off to another day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I ended my playing with updating the Reaper template to include all channels and did some brief test recordings with the Ketron, accordion and BK-7m.\u00a0 The rest we play with later on and buckle the final small details down, for example, I don&#8217;t have the mixer processing settings for the 4 mics and the FB-01, not necessary until I need them later.\u00a0 That is it for today, more to come soon.<\/p>\n<h3>April 11, 2026<\/h3>\n<p>I am up early today.\u00a0 Today I was working on the layout of the song that I want to record, and was writing down a few ideas and registrations.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve also made a change in setup on the BK-7m, which for the first time set it up only as a drum machine, no arranger or secondary instruments as I prepare to make the first recording.\u00a0 I think all is ready for me to start doing my musical homework.<\/p>\n<h3>April 14, 2026<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally figured out the MATRIX send!\u00a0 It turns out I was overthinking things too much.\u00a0 Think of a Matrix like an AUX in terms of setting up except that in a Matrix, we can include other mixes like the Main L\/R or any of the 12 available AUX mixes.\u00a0 I set up Matrix1 as the main output to Zoom meetings and it works fine!<\/p>\n<p>Last, I setup Soft button #1 as a system-wide mute button.\u00a0 If for whatever reason I hit Soft#1, the entire mixer is muted for as long as that button is active&#8230;
